Originating in 1954 in Philadelphia, Meals on Wheels was founded “to support our senior neighbors to extend their independence and health as they age,” allowing them to stay in their homes instead of prematurely moving to a nursing facility, which costs the families and taxpayers unnecessary Medicaid and Medicare expenses every year. Their services have now expanded to any age client who is homebound (Greenville Meals on Wheels has a 28-year-old that they currently visit weekly).
In addition to presenting Meals on Wheels with a donation from the Gran Fondo Hincapie, the staff of Hincapie Sportswear, as well as cyclists from the Holowesko|Citadel p/b Hincapie Sportswear racing team, also volunteer their time at Meals on Wheels by serving and packing meals.
Gran Fondo Hincapie has partnered with the Greenville chapter of Meals on Wheels since the very first ride in 2012. When a cyclist purchases an entrance to the Fondo, a portion of that ticket goes straight to Meals on Wheels. In 2016, proceeds came to $25,000, equating to more than 5,000 hot meals.
